Information on Overseas Membership Enrollment

 

 

OBJECTIVES

 

The Japan Institute of Metals and Materials, JIM, was founded as a non-profit public organization on February 14,1937 with the primary objective of promotion and development of science and technology of metals and related engineering materials.

 

CURRENT NUMBER OF MEMBERSHIP

 

JIM holds about 7,400 regular members, 1,300 student members and others totaling 10000 members. Among regular members half are from the industry sector. Membership is fully open to qualified persons abroad.

 

ORGANIZATION

 

The Board of Directors of JIM consists of 28 Directors including 1 President and 3 Vice Presidents. Directors are mutually elected from 230 Councilors. JIM has 8 local chapters throughout Japan, but does not have overseas chapters.

 

ACTIVITIES

 

JIM has more than 20 standing committees and some ad-hoc committees established as necessary to accomplish major tasks in the objectives of JIM. Major activities of JIM are as follows.
1. Publications

JIM publishes three monthly periodicals:


  1. Materia Japan(in Japanese)
    ,
    the membership periodical of general technical interests;

  2. Journal of The Japan Institute of Metals and Materials(in Japanese)
    , the specialist periodical of original technical papers with synopses and figures in English;
  3. Materials Transactions,
    the specialist periodical in English and collaboratively published with other Institutes in the field of Materials Science from January,2001.

Other publication includes Introductory Courses of Chemical Metallurgy, Contemporary Metallurgy, Metallurgical Engineering Series, Metals Handbook, Metals Data Book, Word Book of Metallurgy and so forth.

Proceedings of international conferences and symposia sponsored by JIM are also on sale.

 

 

2.Meetings and Conferences

 

JIM holds 3-day Annual Meetings twice a year, in spring and in fall, with presentations of over 2,500 papers in total annually.

The Technical Division Committee offers about five to ten symposia during the Annual Meetings on selected topics and about seven to nine symposia at suitable occasions on advanced topics to provide a number of opportunities for its members to participate and pursue individual technical interest.

The Seminar Committee offers three to four fundamental seminars in each year.

JIM’s International Conferences(JIMIC) have frequently been and will be organized and sponsored by JIM, currently including “Solid-Solid Phase Transformation” in 1999.

JIM’s International Symposium(JIMIS) have also frequently been and will be organized and sponsored by JIM, currently including “Recrystallization and Related Phenomena” in 1999.

 

AWARDS

 

Twelve awards are annually conferred to individuals and groups in recognition of their outstanding achievements in advancing science and technology of metallurgy and materials science. The most honorable award for foreigners is The Japan Institute of Metals and Materials Gold Medal, which was conferred, for example, to Dr.J.W.Cahn, Dr.A.Seeger,Dr.S.P.B.Hirsh and Dr.R.W.K.Honeycomb.

The other honor for foreigners is to become a honorary member, which was conferred, for example, to Dr.J.B.Cohen,Dr.E.Hornbogen,Dr.C.SHI, Dr.G.Thomas.

 

PRIVILEGES of MEMBERSHIP

 

The member of JIM is entitled to the followings:

  1. To contribute your papers to Materials Transactions, and Journal of The Japan Institute of Metals and Materials.
  2. To choose “Online Jornal”
  3. To purchase our publications at a member price.
  4. To present papers at our Annual Spring and Fall Meetings.
  5. To participate in our Seminars, Symposiums and our Annual Spring and Fall Meetings.

** When you apply for the sutdent member, please attach a copy of a student certificate with an application form.
*** If you would pay membership dues by Credit Card, Bank Handling Charge would not be needed.
**** The online journal of “J. Japan Inst. Met. Mater.” is free access.

Enrollment on our member

Please fill out the application form and click a send bottom.

For student, after graduation, your membership type will be up dated to regular. If you have
been our student member for more than 1 year, your membership dues turn on regular from
next term.

Please fill out the year and month you will graduate from college or university.

 

Change Enrollment

 

Please change data in an changing form site and click a send bottom. It is supposed not to
transfer Name enrolled our member.

We have 4 types of membership, regular, student, Japanese regular and Japanese student.

If you have a membership of collaborative academic societies, and you would like to subscribe
just “Materials Transactions” or to access online download services, please apply for as a
member of collaborative Institute.

 

Fee of membership, subscription and online download services.

 

We would issue and send a invoice after we confirm your application.

Non-“Materials Transaction” subscriber need to pay $ 5 per paper to download. Then you also
need to register your credit card information. We charge total amount of the month to your
credit card. After we confirm a remittance from credit card agency, we would send an invoice
and a receipt.
